Leeks are a part of  the onion family. Leeks look like a large spring onion but they are different. They are widely used in modern kitchen for soups, stews and other popular dishes because of their fleshy stem and sweet mild onion  flavour. They can be eaten raw especially in salads.

Leeks are also a good source of Vitamins B, C, dietary fibre and folate. Leeks are  grown in sub tropical regions of Australia. They are available throughout the year, but the best leeks are available from March to October.

When buying fom your local green grocer look for the medium sized leeks, white in color and crisp.
