It was a fruitful night for our finalists at this year’s Sydney Markets Fresh Awards, which saw six Your Local Greengrocer members take out seven awards on Wednesday night.
The prestigious event – which recognises and rewards excellence in fresh produce retailing and wholesale across multiple categories – saw prominent figures from Sydney Markets and the NSW fresh produce industry gather at The Star Event Centre in Sydney for an evening of delightful entertainment, drinks and delicious food.
But it was the question on everyone’s minds; “Who would win a coveted Fresh Award?” that had each finalist on the edge of their seat.
Veteran greengrocer Martelli’s Fruit Market Cherrybrook were the first of several members from the Your Local Greengrocer program to win awards, taking out the Knowledge in Action Award which recognises how proactive a business is in educating its customers about fresh produce in a clear and enthusiastic manner.
Rossi’s Fresh Grocer – one of Your Local Greengrocer’s newest members – took home an award for Best Small Business, while longstanding members Harbord Growers Market Balgowlah and Fruitezy Chatswood Chase came away with awards for Best Medium Business and Best Large Business respectively.
For the first time in Fresh Awards history, a Wholesaler of the Year Award was up for grabs which recognises a fruit, vegetable or herb wholesaler who demonstrates a high degree of competence across a wide range of criteria including product quality, business presentation, product knowledge, customer service, branding and marketing.
Premium fruit wholesaler Goldenfruit beat out intense competition from fellow Your Local Greengrocer members Roy Cave & Sons and Fresh Fellas to become the inaugural winners.
But it was Parisi’s Food Hall Rose Bay that came away with the ultimate award: the 2018 Greengrocer of the Year which recognises one fresh fruit and vegetable retailer finalist that achieves the highest scores across all mystery shopping and industry criteria. Not to mention, Parisi’s Food Hall also won the Retail Presentation Award for best store presentation and appearance.
“It was a great night for us and for our industry. I’d like to personally thank my partners and our fantastic staff – we couldn’t have done it without you.” Store manager Mario Bombardier said.
There were also plenty of other winners across many different categories, including B & M Florist who took out Florist of the Year, Grima Farm Fresh Produce winning Produce Grower of the Year, East Coast Wildflowers who won Flower Grower of the Year and Sydney Food Sisters (Effi Tsoukatos & Caterina Sterrantino) who came away with the Blogger of the Year Award.
Your Local Greengrocer would congratulate every finalist and winner from this year’s Fresh Awards and thank Sydney Markets for hosting such an incredible industry event. For more information and photos from the night visit the Fresh Awards website or check out Sydney Markets Facebook page.
