The Nectarine is a member of the stone fruit family. From a scientific perspective the Peach and the Nectarine are the same species. Genetic studies suggest the difference in the fruits comes from a recessive gene in the nectarine and the same dominant gene in the peach. Regardless, the difference in the commercial fruits is that the nectarine, does not carry the fuzz on the skin as a peach does.
The nectarine originated in China and spread to Europe from Persia. It is not clear how or when the nectarine appeared in Australia; some believe it came with European settlement whilst others believed it arrived with early Chinese migration.
These days the prime growing areas in Australia include Southeast Queensland, Central and Eastern NSW, VIC and WA. The Aussie seasons runs from September through April but generally speaking best eating and value is January, February.
Nectarines grow on trees and are harvested when the fruit is near maturity. The fruit continues to ripen after being picked. So, harvesting early allows for the packing and transportation of the fruit with minimum bruising or other damage. As your local greengrocer has fruit on the shelves faster than any other distribution channel, the freshest Nectarines will be available here. When buying, pick ones that are firm, fragrant with a rich colour and smooth glossy skin.
