We all know that “Popeye the Sailor man” ate a lot of spinach and grew very large muscles, defeated his foes and won the lovely “Olive Oyl” so it must be good for us.
Spinach is a green leafy vegetable and grows to about 30 cm and likes the cool weather. It is an annual and the outside leaves can be picked regularly. It keeps producing for about 1 month. It will keep in your crisper for a week but like all vegetables is best eaten fresh.
It was though to originate around Iran and was a popular vegetable in the western Mediterranean area. First recorded in Naples in 647ad so has been around for a long time. In Australia it is grown widely in Victoria and Tasmania.
Some of the nutritional benefits of Spinach are Vitamin C, beta carotene, folate, vitamin b6, vitamin E, magnesium and potassium.
However “Popeye” doesn’t know that we have a secret! We don’t need to squeeze our spinach out of a can. We can buy it fresh from our local green grocer.
