When stepping foot into Golden Banana, it’s clear that owner/proprietor Micky has a passion for fresh produce like no one else.
Like many greengrocers, she calls it how she sees it and holds herself to the upmost standard when it comes to delivering product freshness and quality. And these values are no more apparent than in her Top Ryde store.
“I don’t think there’s anyone I know that loves the industry more than me.” She said.
Golden Banana offers a wide selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, located in the Top Ryde shopping precinct which poses strong retail competition for attracting customers.
“One of the big things we’re known for is our variety. There probably isn’t a thing selling at [Sydney Markets] we haven’t sold before.”
“It’s the only way we find out what our customers want and what they don’t.”
This extends to Golden Banana’s in-store delicatessen, where Micky personally prepares their signature lines of sun-dried tomatoes, char-grilled eggplant and zucchini, roasted capsicum and marinated mushrooms.
“If it’s not good enough for me, I simply won’t sell it.”
Starting out with no family history in the fruit and vegetable business, she worked as a casual fruiterer from age 13 at a local greengrocer at Villawood in Sydney’s West.
“Back then we only had one old forklift at the shop, so most of the stock was unloaded by hand. It wasn’t easy work.”
Now at 61, Micky has gained a wealth of industry experience and an undeniable work ethic that her staff are always willing to learn from and remain loyal to.
“You don’t work 70-hour weeks if you don’t love what you do!” She said.
One of Micky’s loyal staff is Winnie, who’s managed Golden Banana for 5 ½ years. She says it’s important to shop independently because small businesses support their customers.
“When you shop with us you know the produce is fresh and if you can’t find something in our shop, we’ll always do our best to get it in for you. It’s that personal service you don’t find at the major supermarkets.”
