By now you’ve probably seen Your Local Greengrocer’s Now That’s Pure Gold promotion plastered all over your nearest fruit and veg shop. And you should also know that purchasing a pineapple could be your “golden” ticket to this years Origin II Blockbuster to see the mighty Blues take on QLD, live from our very own Corporate Box.

But why else is it a good time to stock up on one of Australia’s favourite tropical fruits? Here’s five reasons to keep in mind next to you’re out shopping:

1. Aussie pineapples are eating incredibly sweet this time of year.

While pineapple is grown in Queensland and is in-season all year round, during Winter the gold varieties are at their sweetest and are harvested in the warm Queensland sunshine. Because they flowered back in December last year, the fruit has been maturing in the warm sun for the last 6 months. This is why right now is the best time to buy a pineapple — simply being they taste so damn good!

2. They’re also cheaper than you’d think.

There’s generally more of an abundance of pineapple in the cooler months than there is in Summer. And with high supply comes low prices. Expect to see pineapple practically “flying out the door” of Your Local Greengrocer because now is the perfect time to snatch up some quality Aussie pineapples for a bargain.

3. Pineapples are nature’s flu buster.

A pineapple a day keeps the doctor away – that’s how the saying goes right? Not only are pineapples jam pack with flavour, they contain an abundance of essential vitamins needed to ward off Winter sickness. Just a single serve of fresh pineapple contains 100% of your recommended daily Vitamin C intake. They also contain bromelain, an enzyme found especially in pineapples which helps reduce inflammation and swelling — particularly of the nasal passages. Plus they’re naturally high in fibre which is good news for your gut.

4. Pineapples are also surprisingly versatile.

The thing that’s great about pineapple is it can be cut up and eaten as a delicious sweet treat on it’s own, mixed into a fruit salad or even used as an excellent ingredient to spicy stir fries or stews. The ability to incorporate pineapple in a variety of both sweet and savoury dishes, whilst being perfectly enjoyed on its own, makes it such an attractive option. Our tip is to use pineapple with roast pork — definitely worth trying as the Winter months approach.

5. They could help you get to this year’s State of Origin Game II.
